1884, The Bustle Returns

A softly curved bustle was first popular in the 1870's. When it returned a decade later the silhouette was more angular with hard edges. This lady is ready for an important dinner, wedding or reception where a high necked dress is required. The weight of these costumes and the structures required to support the huge rear extension meant that mobility was limited, sitting awkward and the dresses very heavy and cumbersome.
