A Special Day
The gown was inspired by a 1933 wedding dress designed by Norman Hartnell for the British socialite Margaret Whigham's wedding to the American amateur golfer Charles Sweeney at Brompton Oratory, London. Her gown was of silk satin with bead embroidery, angel sleeves of silk tulle and featured a nine foot train. The dress took 30 seamstresses six weeks to construct and is now in the collection of the V&A Museum. The bride became the notorious Lady Argyll following her divorce and remarriage to the Duke of Argyll.
